10th annual 'Big Latch On' in the U.P. invites nursing moms to gather together to breastfeed

All nursing moms are invited to join in the 2019 “Big Latch On,” a synchronized community breastfeeding event on Saturday, August 3, at the Jutila Center in Hancock. The Big Latch On takes place at 10:30 a.m. and gives moms the chance to meet with other moms and help break the world record for the most women breastfeeding simultaneously. Participants are asked to arrive at 10 a.m. to register and get settled in.

Co-sponsors for the 2019 Big Latch On are Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital & Clinics, U.P. Health System – Portage, and the Western Upper Peninsula Health Department. Light snacks and refreshments, and coloring pages for older children will be provided during the event.
The Global Big Latch On takes place every August to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week. In 2005, Women’s Health Action held the first event in New Zealand to raise awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding, encourage the formation of support networks between breastfeeding women and normalize breastfeeding as a part of daily life. Since its initiation, the community event has grown into a global phenomenon. In 2018, 21,500 children were breastfed across 778 locations in 28 countries. In 2017, 17,990 children were breastfed across 725 locations in 23 countries.

The Jutila Center is located at 200 Michigan Street in Hancock. For more information, call Casey Baird  906.483.1275 or go online to biglatchon.org.
