Gifts of Cash and 1881 Society

A gift of cash is a simple and easy way to make a gift. You can send us a check or money order, or make a gift online.

1881 remains a notable year in Aspirus St. Luke’s History. It is the year St. Luke’s first opened its doors above a blacksmith’s shop in Duluth. In recognition of our founding, annual donors of $1,881 or more become members of St. Luke’s Foundation’s 1881 Society, and are noted annually in our newsletter and are guests at St. Luke’s Foundation’s Giving Societies Dinner.

Planned Giving and St. Paul’s Society

A planned gift made through your will or estate plan is one of the most personal gifts you can make and therefore one of the most meaningful gifts we can receive. A planned gift can be as simple and heartfelt as adding a bequest in your will or estate plan in support of St. Luke’s Foundation, or by adding the St. Luke’s Foundation as a beneficiary to your insurance policy, IRA or 401(k). Your planned gift may be designated to support the area or areas closest to your heart and have a lasting impact for generations to come. We encourage you to talk with your financial advisor or estate planner for guidance.

Aspirus St. Luke’s exists today because of the members and elders of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church who founded the hospital on October 18, 1881 in response to the typhoid outbreak in Duluth. All who choose to make a planned gift to St. Luke’s Foundation will become members of our St. Paul’s Society, recognizing legacy gifts and are guests at St. Luke’s Foundation’s Giving Societies Dinner.

Gifts of Stocks and Appreciated Assets

Giving stock can sometimes be more beneficial than giving cash. If you make a gift of appreciated stocks, bonds or mutual funds, the IRS will allow you to avoid capital gains tax on any gains incurred since you bought the stock. We encourage you to talk with your financial advisor for more information.

Retirement Funds

Retirement funds like an IRA, 401(k) or 403(b) gifted to your heirs may be subject to substantial taxes but are tax-free to charity. Rather than naming your family as a beneficiary of your retirement plan, consider naming the St. Luke’s Foundation. You can then pass other assets that are not as highly taxed – including stocks, bonds and real estate – to your heirs. Additionally, if you are age 70 ½ or older, you may be able to save on income taxes by making a gift from your annual IRA Required Minimum Distribution (RMD). We encourage you to talk with your financial advisor or estate planner for more information.

Life Insurance

By gifting a life insurance policy or naming St. Luke’s Foundation as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy, you can make a meaningful gift and provide a lasting legacy, while also reducing your taxable estate.

Corporate Giving

Through a corporate partnership, there are many opportunities for you to designate your contribution to meet the philanthropic goals of your company and give back in a way that is meaningful to the community. Many businesses also match donations made by their employees to double the impact of their gift. Ask if your employer has a matching gifts program

Grateful Patient

If a doctor, caregiver, staff member, or volunteer touched your life during your visit or stay, consider recognizing them with a gift of gratitude. A charitable gift of any size is a meaningful way to say “thank you.” Your honoree will be personally notified of your thoughtful tribute.

Tribute Gifts

Making a gift in honor or memory of a loved one is a powerful way to keep their spirit alive and support the care that matters most to you. Many families choose to direct memorial donations from funerals to St. Luke’s Foundation, helping create a lasting legacy in the areas of care that touched their loved one’s life.

Tribute gifts on special occasions—like birthdays, Mother’s Day, or Father’s Day—also offer a meaningful way to celebrate family members and friends while making a difference in the health of our community.

Your thoughtful gift, given in remembrance or celebration, brings comfort and hope to those who need it most.

In-Kind Donations
