Aspirus Nurse Residency Program

Program Eligibility

You don’t need to apply for the program. You’ll be enrolled in the program if you’re starting a registered nursing position at an Aspirus Acute Care Hospital and are newly licensed or have less than 12 months of nursing experience. You’ll be placed with a cohort group based on your employment start date.

Program Information 

Aspirus welcomes new graduate nurses into the Nurse Residency program following their department orientation to continue a supportive learning environment. Residents will join their cohort for a four-hour monthly session over the six-month program. Continuing Education credits are available for some content in the program. 

Sessions Focus On:

  • Creating a support network during transition to practice
  • Communication strategies
  • Clinical reflection and discussion with mentors 
  • Additional learning events include case studies and mock emergency scenario application
  • Process Improvement and Shared Governance Integration

Frequently Asked Questions

If I transfer to another unit, do I continue in the nurse residency program?

Yes, if you transfer to another department in the same or another participating hospital, you will continue to participate in the program. If you transfer within Aspirus to a post acute care or outpatient clinic dept, you will exit the program.

Am I required to participate in the program?

Aspirus is committed to supporting the successful transition of all new nurse graduates. The Nurse Residency Program helps you excel during the transition to practice as a professional nurse. Active participation in the Nurse Residency Program is required for all qualified new nurses.

How often is the Nurse Residency Program offered?

Nurse Residency is offered twice per year as a system cohort in all regions starting in April and October. The program is additionally offered at tertiary hospitals in February, June, August, and December based on need.

How does my work schedule accommodate attendance?

Your schedule will be adjusted to accommodate your attendance for the monthly sessions, either as part of your worked hours or in addition to your worked hours. This is determined by your department leader.

What should I wear to my monthly session?

The dress code for the monthly sessions is to wear your name badge above your waist with scrubs or casual dress attire. 

How often are the program sessions?

The Nurse Residency Program sessions are held monthly for 6 months. Each session is approximately 4 hours in length.

Is Continued Education hours offered from the program?

Yes, there is CE credit offered for various topics presented during sessions.

Is my time paid to participate in the program?

Yes, all required education time is paid during the Nurse Residency Program.
