Acne is the most common skin condition in the United States, affecting nearly 50 million Americans each year, according to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD). During Acne Awareness Month, Aspirus Dermatologist Sarah Hostetler, MD, is encouraging patients to move beyond social media trends and seek care tailored to their individual needs.
Acne affects most adolescents and often continues into or develops in adulthood for women. Despite how common it is, many patients cycle through products they find online without knowing whether those treatments match their skin type, acne severity, or the location of their breakouts.
"There is a lot on social media, and you just do not know the reality of what treatments people have actually had and what has made a difference," Dr. Hostetler said.
Acne treatment is not one-size-fits-all
A dermatologist evaluates the full picture before recommending treatment. Acne can range from mild cases, such as whiteheads and blackheads, to more severe cystic lesions that may cause pain and permanent scarring. Treatment plans are built around each patient, taking into account skin type, lifestyle, acne location, and what has already been tried.
Dr. Hostetler describes treatment as a step-by-step process. Many patients begin with over-the-counter options such as benzoyl peroxide or adapalene. If needed, care may progress to prescription-strength topical treatments and, in some cases, oral medication.
Consistency and patience matter
"Most topical treatments take two to three months of consistent use before you know if they are working," Dr. Hostetler said. "Trying something for five to seven days and giving up is one of the most common mistakes I see."
For patients who feel like they have tried everything, Aspirus dermatologists offer personalized care for patients of all ages, with treatment options tailored to each stage of acne.
"Come in," Dr. Hostetler said. "We can talk through what you have tried, how you used it, and how long you gave it. There is always something we can do to help."
