Aspirus is recognizing Maternal Health Awareness Month by emphasizing the importance of early and consistent prenatal care for families. Certified Nurse Midwife Sarah Lamere, CNM, MSN, says timely prenatal visits and shared decision making are essential components of a healthy pregnancy.
Lamere has worked in women’s health for more than a decade and became a midwife to support patients throughout the full pregnancy and childbirth experience. She says maternal health advocacy begins with ensuring patients have access to clear, evidence-based information that helps them make informed choices about their care.
“I wanted to be part of people’s journeys in a more meaningful way,” Lamere said. “Advocacy means helping patients understand their options and supporting them in decisions that reflect their values and needs.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), early prenatal care is associated with lower risks of complications and improved outcomes for both parent and baby. Lamere encourages patients to attend regular prenatal visits and ask questions throughout their pregnancy, noting that open communication helps guide safe, evidence-based care.
Lamere says midwives use fewer interventions when appropriate and focus on holistic, whole-person care that includes the patient’s support system.
“Shared decision-making means I bring my clinical knowledge, and the patient brings their values and questions,” Lamere said. “Together, we make the decision that is best for them. Midwives aren’t just part of the medical team, we’re part of the patient’s support team.”
As Maternal Health Awareness Month continues, Aspirus Health reaffirms its commitment to expanding access to prenatal care, strengthening maternal health resources, and supporting families throughout pregnancy and childbirth.
