PGY1 Pharmacy Residency in Acute Care

This one-year postgraduate program provides comprehensive training for pharmacists seeking advanced clinical skills. Residents care for a variety of patients in inpatient and ambulatory settings, preparing for diverse pharmacy practice roles.

Staffing

Residents work every other weekend, alternating between the central pharmacy and an inpatient clinical role, and also cover two holidays per year.

Teaching Opportunities

Residents have teaching opportunities through collaboration with the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy – Duluth Campus, serving as teaching assistants, delivering didactic lectures, and optionally completing a teaching certificate.

PGY1 Ambulatory Care Residency

This one-year postgraduate year 1 residency program offers individualized training for pharmacists interested in providing Medication Therapy Management for patients in outpatient clinics. Residents will gain direct patient care experience, with ample opportunities to work collaboratively with care teams in the ambulatory care setting. Our program currently accepts one resident per year.

Teaching Opportunities

The resident will have teaching opportunities through collaboration with the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy – Duluth Campus, serving as teaching assistants, delivering didactic lectures, and optionally completing a teaching certificate.

Staffing

The resident will staff one day per week in the outpatient/community pharmacy setting.

Projects

Each resident will learn project management skills while completing one major research project. This project will focus on one specific aspect of ambulatory care pharmacy practice. Results of the project will be presented at the local, regional and national research conferences and a manuscript will be written for the project. The resident will also complete several smaller projects as part of their various rotations.

Application Process

Prerequisites: Pharm.D degree and licensure as a pharmacist in Minnesota no later than August 1
Requirements: Enrollment in ASHP National Matching Service. Applicants must submit the following through the Pharmacy Online Residency Application Service (PhORCAS): three letters of recommendation, curriculum vitae, official college transcript, letter of intent, and project or presentation

PGY2 Oncology Residency

This one-year postgraduate program provides individualized training for pharmacists specializing in hematology/oncology patient care. Residents gain experience in both inpatient and outpatient oncology settings, preparing for advanced clinical roles and eligibility to become a Board-Certified Oncology Pharmacist through the Board of Pharmacy Specialties.

Residents in the PGY2 Oncology program staff one weekday per week in the Infusion Therapy Clinic or inpatient oncology unit, with no formal weekend shifts.

PGY2 Pharmacotherapy Residency

This one-year postgraduate program focuses on pharmacotherapy across patient care transitions. Residents gain direct patient care experience, education, and clinical research exposure, preparing for positions in either inpatient or ambulatory settings.

HOW TO APPLY

Application Process

Aspiring residents seeking advanced pharmacy training must meet the prerequisites below and submit their application materials through the process outlined.

Prerequisites

Pharm.D. degree
Licensure as a pharmacist in Minnesota (PGY1: by Aug 1; PGY2: by Sept 1)
PGY2 applicants must complete an ASHP-accredited PGY1 residency

Application Deadline & Interview

Application Deadline

The application deadline for all residency programs is in early January. Applicants should refer to the ASHP Residency Directory for the official date and ensure all materials are submitted on time to be considered for interviews.

Interview

On-site interviews are conducted in January and February for invited applicants and include meetings with the program director, department leadership, and preceptors.
