Calumet native returns to her roots joining Aspirus Health

Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital and Clinics proudly welcomes Nurse Practitioner Karen MacDonald, NP-C, to its excellent cardiology team. She joins Aspirus Cardiologist Peter Vaitkevicius, MD, in delivering a higher level of cardiac care for patients close to home.

MacDonald is originally from Calumet and is a 2008 graduate of Calumet High School. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Finlandia University in Hancock and a Master of Science degree in nursing from Purdue University Global in Lafayette, Ind. She is a Michigan and Wisconsin-licensed registered nurse and family nurse practitioner and is a member of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. Certifications include Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Basic Life Support, and Trauma Nurse Core Certification.

MacDonald is a familiar face at Aspirus having worked as a nurse in the intensive care unit at Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital in Laurium. As a member of the cardiology team working alongside Aspirus cardiologists, physician assistants and nurses, she strives to help patients improve their health and quality of life.

“I’m so excited to be able to do what I love and care for the people in the community where I grew up,” MacDonald said. “It’s rewarding returning home to my family, friends and this great community and also being able to care for those who’ve made the Keweenaw so special to me.”

In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband and children; Harper and Taylor, bowling and anything to do with the outdoors.
