Aspirus Wausau Hospital Completes Emergency Department Expansion

(WAUSAU, Wis.) Aspirus Wausau Hospital (AWH) has completed the final phase of its emergency department expansion, with the latest addition opening to patients on Tuesday, June 3. This milestone marks the conclusion of a multi-phase project designed to meet growing demand for emergency and trauma services in the region.
The final phase brings eight new patient rooms online, increasing the department’s total capacity to 30 treatment spaces. These additions include enhanced trauma and critical care rooms to support the hospital’s role as a regional referral and tertiary care center.
The expansion began in 2022 in response to increasing emergency volumes and a need for modernized high-acuity care spaces. The Emergency Department originally had 18 beds, and each phase of the project has been strategically timed to ensure continued operations without disruption to patient care.
“This final phase is more than just physical space,” said Mason Lucca, Aspirus Wausau Hospital Emergency Department Director. “It represents our ongoing commitment to providing timely, high-quality emergency care to people throughout our service area.”
With construction now complete, the department is fully operational and equipped to handle a broader range of emergency cases, from routine injuries to life-threatening conditions.
