Aspirus Stevens Point Celebrates New Inpatient Hospital Unit

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – On February 19, residents in the Stevens Point area will have another option for hospital care from a nationally-recognized health care organization. Aspirus Stevens Point celebrated its new eight-bed medical/surgical inpatient unit with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday.

Everyone is invited to tour the new hospital unit on Saturday, February 15, from 9 am to 11 am. Aspirus Stevens Point is located at 5409 Vern Holmes Drive. Tour guests are asked to use the main entrance.

The $3 million, 6,000-square-foot expansion adds overnight care for medical and surgical patients, including emergency patients who need to stay for observation. The ability to care for patients overnight also enables Aspirus Stevens Point to offer surgeries that it previously could not accommodate.

“We are working to ensure that all the communities we serve have local access to the health care services they need,” said Matt Heywood, Aspirus President & CEO. “Sometimes that requires new buildings. Sometimes it’s new providers or new services. But it always means improving for you.”

“We opened as a clinic in 2006, celebrated an extensive expansion in 2017, opened an emergency department in 2018, and now celebrate the opening of this eight-bed inpatient hospital unit,” said Robert Smith, Vice President – Aspirus Stevens Point.

“We are so very happy and proud that Aspirus has chosen to invest in our community,” said Stevens Point Mayor Mike Wiza. “Providing top-quality medical care is synonymous with Aspirus, and this expansion will compound that commitment.”

In addition to the new inpatient hospital care, Aspirus Stevens Point offers: adult and pediatric primary care, walk-in and emergency care, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopedics, cardiology, digestive care/GI, care for cancer and blood disorders, allergy/immunology care, endocrinology, nephrology, neurology, spine and neurosciences care, podiatry/foot and ankle care, audiology, diabetes care, nutrition counseling, ear, nose and throat care/otolaryngology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, urology, occupational health, and pulmonary medicine.

“Our Aspirus Stevens Point team will provide care for patients with a wide range of health conditions, including congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, infections such as pneumonia that require care in a hospital, and other health conditions,” said Dr. Steven Phillipson, Aspirus Director of Hospital Medicine. “Our team will also be supporting the care provided by our surgeons, who will be performing surgeries for gall bladder disease, appendicitis, some hernia repairs, and joint replacements.”

Aspirus Stevens Point currently employs about 90 people and is adding another 18 jobs to staff the new hospital unit – including three new hospitalist advanced practice clinicians (APCs).
