RHINELANDER, Wis. – Aspirus Health is pleased to welcome John Ester, MD, a board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist with more than 25 years of experience, to the medical staff at Aspirus Rhinelander Hospital and Aspirus Rhinelander Clinic – N Shore Drive.
Dr. Ester brings extensive expertise in comprehensive women’s health care, including management of high- and low-risk pregnancies, labor and delivery, gynecologic emergencies, minimally invasive surgery, pelvic ultrasound, and inpatient obstetric and gynecologic care.
Throughout his distinguished career, he has cared for patients in hospital, clinic, academic, and military settings while also serving as an educator, mentor, and clinical leader focused on advancing the quality and safety of women’s health services.

Dr. Ester earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Minnesota School of Medicine in Minneapolis. He completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology through the Wright State University School of Medicine at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. He also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from North Park College in Chicago, Illinois.
His military service with the United States Air Force was recognized with the Air Force Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service and the Air Combat Command Clinical Research Award.

Reflecting on his journey into medicine, Dr. Ester added, “I was drawn to medicine after being a patient myself following a serious injury. That experience taught me how important it is to feel heard, cared for, and safe. Pregnancy and childbirth are among the most meaningful and vulnerable times in a person's life, and my goal is to help women and families feel informed, supported, and safe throughout that journey.”
At Aspirus Rhinelander Hospital, Dr. Ester will help support the hospital’s trusted Birthing Center, which provides personalized maternity care close to home. The Birthing Center offers skilled obstetrical care, family-centered birthing experiences, and support from a dedicated team of physicians, nurses, and specialists committed to the health and well-being of both mother and baby.
When he is not caring for patients, Dr. Ester enjoys spending time with his grandchildren, working on cars, and taking advantage of the natural beauty and outdoor recreation opportunities found throughout the Northwoods.
