Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital and Clinics is making it easier and more convenient to be screened for colorectal cancer with direct access colonoscopies.
“Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the US,” said General Surgeon Rachel Laszko, MD. “Colorectal cancer is largely preventable when screening is conducted. Early detection and prevention are critically important for treatment.”
The American Cancer Society now recommends people at average risk for colorectal cancer begin screening at age 45, five years earlier than the previous recommendation of 50. People who are at increased risk for cancer may want to start colorectal cancer screening before age 45 or be screened more often. If you have a family history of colon cancer or rectal cancer, talk to your doctor about whether you might benefit from earlier or more frequent screenings.
“We are excited to offer direct access colonoscopies at Aspirus Keweenaw,” said Mark Randell, Director – Clinics. “They are a great fit for today’s busy lifestyles. This process allows for scheduling a colonoscopy to be simple and convenient.”
During colonoscopies, general surgeons can perform biopsies, remove polyps and diagnose colon and rectal conditions.
Direct access colonoscopies allow healthy, age-appropriate individuals to schedule a screening colonoscopy without a pre-procedure office visit.
