Top 3 Myths People Believe About Orthopedic Care

For many, orthopedic pain has been quietly holding them back for years. Joint, tendon, or muscle issues can make even simple tasks like lifting a child, walking the dog, or carrying groceries difficult and discouraging.

“Often people don’t realize how much relief is possible with the right care,” said Dr. Lee Kenyon, Aspirus Orthopedic Specialist. “I've found this is because people have misconceptions about orthopedics. These prevent many from taking that first step toward treatment.”

In honor of Bone & Joint Action Week (October 12 to 20), Aspirus Health is addressing these myths head on.

Myth 1: Orthopedic care always means surgery.
Many assume that a visit to orthopedics will lead straight to an operation. Dr. Kenyon says that’s not always the case. “There are so many non-surgical treatment options we can try before we start talking about surgery,” he shared.

Physical therapy, injections, braces, activity modifications, and lifestyle changes, such as improving posture, strength training, or weight management, can all help. Recent advances like ultrasound technology are also improving precision and results.

“Ultrasound imaging is something I’m especially excited about,” said Dr. Kenyon. “It lets us see joints in motion, pinpoint pain that wouldn’t show up on an x-ray or MRI, and guide injections with incredible accuracy.”

As a result, patients often find faster answers, less invasive treatment, and more ways to stay active without surgery.

Myth 2: Orthopedics is only for athletes or older adults.

The truth is: anyone can benefit from orthopedic care. “We treat all ages, all shapes and sizes,” Dr. Kenyon said.

Common issues orthopedic care can address include:

  • Aching knees, hips, or shoulders that make walking or climbing stairs difficult
  • Back or neck pain from strain, posture, or long hours at a desk
  • Wrist, hand, or elbow pain from repetitive motion or overuse
  • Tendon or ligament problems, such as tennis elbow or Achilles tendonitis
  • Arthritis or joint stiffness that limits daily activities
  • Sprains, strains, or stress fractures
  • Muscle pain or weakness that affects balance and mobility

If you’re dealing with ongoing discomfort, stiffness, or swelling, an orthopedic specialist can help.

Myth 3: It’s fine to just push through the pain.
Life is busy. Finding time to address aches and pains that can be tolerated can feel unrealistic. However, waiting too long can lead to bigger problems later.

“Unfortunately, I’ve treated people who ended up needing surgery when earlier attention might have prevented it,” said Dr. Kenyon.

Even mild or nagging pain can signal something worth checking. “If pain isn’t improving with rest or over-the-counter remedies, if it wakes you up at night, or if you notice swelling or redness, that’s your cue to come in,” he said.

Modern care for lasting mobility
Modern orthopedic care focuses on long-term function and quality of life.

“Our goal is to help people move better and feel stronger,” said Dr. Kenyon. “With today’s tools and techniques, we can do that more effectively than ever.”

Aspirus Health encourages anyone struggling with joint, muscle, or tendon pain to schedule an appointment. Personalized care can relieve pain, restore movement, and help prevent future issues.
