Parents deciding whether to schedule a sports physical or an annual exam can often accomplish both in a single well-child visit. According to Sarah Dennison, MD, pediatrician with Aspirus Health, annual well-child visits include the health evaluation needed for sports participation while also providing a broader assessment of a child's overall health.
A sports physical focuses primarily on athletic participation. A well-child visit goes beyond sports eligibility by evaluating a child's growth, development, mental health and overall well-being.
"Even if you don't think there's a problem, come in and check on your child's growth and development. We can make sure they're progressing in the healthiest way possible," said Dr. Dennison.
That broader focus can help identify concerns before they affect a child's health, performance in school or participation in sports. Even when children appear healthy, annual visits give families an opportunity to discuss questions or changes that may otherwise go unnoticed.
"We talk about nutrition, how important it is to hydrate before athletic activity, and other habits that help keep children healthy throughout the year, not just during sports season. We can do all of that in the same visit," said Dr. Dennison.
Annual visits also allow providers to review injuries, including concussions and broken bones, as well as changes in a child's health history that may require additional follow-up before sports participation.
Families should bring any required sports participation forms to their appointment. Requirements may vary by school and sport, and having paperwork available can help ensure forms are completed before practices and competitions begin.
Appointments can be scheduled by calling a child's primary care clinic or requesting an appointment through MyAspirus. For more information about pediatric care, annual well-child visits or to find a provider near you, visit aspirus.org/pediatrics.
