Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) is helping patients with complex and slow-healing wounds access advanced treatment options that support healing, reduce complications, and improve quality of life. Available through Aspirus wound care services, HBO delivers 100 percent oxygen in a pressurized chamber, increasing oxygen levels in the bloodstream and helping damaged tissue heal more effectively.

The therapy is commonly used to treat diabetic foot ulcers, bone infections, radiation-related injuries, and other wounds that have not responded to traditional treatments. For patients facing prolonged healing times, HBO can provide an important tool in preventing further complications and supporting recovery.

“Hyperbaric oxygen helps stimulate the growth of new blood vessels in the body,” said Athena Boardman, Clinical Program Director, Aspirus Wisconsin Rapids Hospital. “By improving oxygenation to damaged tissue, we can support healing, reduce infection risk, and in some cases even prevent amputation.”

During treatment, patients lie comfortably inside a clear, enclosed chamber for approximately two hours while breathing pure oxygen under increased atmospheric pressure. The process is painless; patients remain awake throughout treatment, and many choose to watch television during their session.

Patients with diabetes, circulation issues, or wounds that show signs of delayed healing may benefit from an evaluation by a wound care specialist. Symptoms such as increased redness, swelling, drainage, warmth, or wounds that do not improve as expected may indicate the need for specialized treatment. Aspirus wound care teams evaluate each patient individually to determine whether HBO is appropriate for their condition.

“We work closely with each patient to ensure their care plan fits their health needs and lifestyle,” Boardman said. “Hyperbaric therapy is a safe and effective option that can make a meaningful difference in healing outcomes.”

Patients interested in hyperbaric oxygen therapy should speak with their primary care provider or specialist about a referral. This allows the wound care team to review medical history, determine eligibility, and develop a personalized treatment plan. Aspirus continues to invest in advanced wound care services to expand access to specialized care across the region.
