Aspirus Wausau Hospital Birthing Center announces opening of Obstetric Emergency Department

10/22/2025

Aspirus Health is proud to announce the opening of its new Obstetric Emergency Department (OBED) located at the Aspirus Wausau Hospital Birthing Center. The new OBED provides specialized care to expectant and postpartum mothers facing an emergency, improving outcomes and creating a more positive patient experience.

The OBED is the first in the Wausau area and represents Aspirus Health’s commitment to maternal health services and the community. “The OBED is staffed 24/7 by Board-certified OB/Gyns,” explains Dr. Dennis McFadden, a Board-certified OB/Gyn at Aspirus OB/Gyn Associates and Aspirus Wausau Hospital Birthing Center. “It serves to help patients in a more expert manner, improving patient safety and quality of care. And that’s really what’s going to improve outcomes overall.”

Dr. McFadden reiterates that the OBED is for expectant and postpartum patients only. “OBEDs are intended for women who are 20+ weeks pregnant and are experiencing pregnancy-related concerns such as bleeding, abdominal pain, or dizziness; we will also see women who have recently delivered – up to six weeks postpartum – who are experiencing pre-eclampsia symptoms like headache, vision changes, and pain in the stomach” he explains.

The department is equipped to handle all types of pregnancy-related emergencies — from early complications to post-delivery concerns. “We always think about preeclampsia, especially. It has a risk of seizure associated with it, and that risk doesn’t dissipate just because you’ve delivered,” explains McFadden.

Expectant or postpartum patients seeking OB emergency services will enter at the Birthing Center main entrance.

The addition of the OBED at the Aspirus Wausau Hospital Birthing Center is part of a comprehensive expansion and remodel at the hospital, including building 5 new rooms dedicated to the OBED. Architects thoughtfully designed the space to be calming, comforting, and soothing.
