National Breastfeeding Month, observed each August, highlights the importance of education and support in helping families meet their breastfeeding goals. While most U.S. infants receive some breast milk, only 27.9 percent are exclusively breastfed through six months, well below the Healthy People 2030 target of 42.4 percent, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Health experts say access to breastfeeding education and lactation support before and after childbirth can help families overcome common challenges and continue breastfeeding for as long as they choose.
Bailey Trzebiatowski, RN, a labor and delivery nurse and lactation counselor with Aspirus Health, said many breastfeeding questions begin during pregnancy and continue well after a baby is born. She said individualized education and ongoing lactation support can help families address concerns ranging from latching difficulties and pumping to infant weight gain and feeding confidence.
“Aspirus provides breastfeeding support to moms during pregnancy and postpartum,” said Trzebiatowski. “Every consult is customized. We cover latch, pre- and post-weighted feeds, and address any pumping or breastfeeding concerns. We support families both in the hospital and in our clinics.”
During hospital stays, lactation consultants are available to assist mothers with breastfeeding and address questions that may arise after delivery. After discharge, ongoing assistance is available through in-person visits, phone consultations, and email support.
“We make it easy for families to get help, whether through their OB provider, pediatrician, or directly through a lactation consult,” Trzebiatowski said. “Our goal is to ensure every mom feels confident and connected with support from pregnancy through postpartum.”
Lactation consultants also work with obstetric and pediatric providers when coordinated care is needed.
