Job Shadowing Opportunities

Aspirus Health offers interested individuals the opportunity to explore healthcare careers through structured job shadow experiences across a variety of departments and specialties. A job shadow is an observational experience in which an individual accompanies a healthcare professional in a hospital or clinic setting, observing daily duties and asking questions to learn more about the role. No hands-on activities are allowed.

Program Highlights/Eligibility Requirements:

  • Observe a medical professional in an available department or specialty.
  • Applicants must be at least 16 years old.
  • Standard shadowing experiences may be up to 8 hours in a year (September 1 – August 31).
  • Extended shadowing (also known as Observation) experiences are over 8 hours and require a background check, TB test, and additional onboarding steps.
    • Generally, extended shadowing experiences are designed for students who need documented hours as part of a college or university program prerequisite.
  • Each job shadow request requires a separate application.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I be able to interact with patients?

No. Job shadowing is strictly observational. Patient interaction is limited and must follow all hospital privacy standards.

Can job shadowing lead to employment or volunteer opportunities?

Shadowing does not guarantee a job, but it can help participants understand career paths, prepare for interviews, and make informed decisions about future applications.

How far in advance should I apply?

You will need to submit your application at least 4 weeks in advance of your preferred shadowing date to allow time for processing your application and scheduling.

I submitted my application, but I haven’t heard back yet. How long does it take to process an application?

If you submitted an application, please allow 2 weeks for processing before reaching out to follow up on the status of your application.

I would like to add more hours to my shadowing experience and will now be over 8 hours for the year. What are my next steps?

Please fill out another application and indicate that you are requesting an extended shadowing experience. Extended shadowing experiences require additional onboarding steps.

What is the preferred method for TB testing?

The TB blood test is one step and is the preferred method for testing. The skin test may also be used, but that is a two-step process, and both steps must be completed and documented before you will be considered for an extended shadowing experience.
