Breast Care & Mammography
Regular mammograms are one of the most effective tools for detecting breast cancer early, when treatment is often most successful. Aspirus offers screening mammograms for women beginning at age 40 and recommends annual screenings thereafter.
While breast cancer screening guidelines vary among organizations, many agree that beginning routine screening at age 40 may be beneficial for some women after discussing the benefits and limitations of mammography with their health care provider.
Aspirus encourages shared decision-making between women and their providers to determine the screening approach that is right for them. Free mammograms may also be available for those who qualify.
A Note About Screening Options
Aspirus does not support the use of thermography (infrared breast imaging) as a primary screening tool for breast cancer or as a substitute for mammography. The FDA has approved thermography only as a supplemental tool to be used alongside mammography, not as a standalone screening method.
