Your First Appointment

  • Arrive 15 minutes before your appointment time for registration and paperwork.
  • Bring your current insurance card(s) and your provider's order.
  • Be knowledgeable of your current medications and allergies.

Your first appointment typically takes about an hour. During this appointment, your therapist will complete a comprehensive evaluation and will work with you to develop your individualized plan of care.

Even if you see a doctor from another facility or in another community, you can do your outpatient rehabilitation locally at one of our three convenient locations. We are able to provide the services your doctor orders and are happy to work with your doctor to ensure continuity of your care.

Physical Therapy

Our physical therapists offer an evidence-based approach to treating nearly any part of the body or condition. Our experienced staff offers a variety of backgrounds and areas of specialization. This enables us to tailor an individualized rehabilitation program for each of our patients. We pride ourselves on helping our patients achieve the best outcomes possible as quickly as possible.

Our physical therapists use a variety of manual techniques, exercises, modalities and specialized equipment to help patients recover from an injury, limitation, decline in mobility, decline in function or pain. Education is also a cornerstone of physical therapy, promoting prevention of further decline or future injury and empowering patients to manage their symptoms long after their outpatient therapy program is complete.

Occupational Therapy

Our therapists will work with you to determine your goals for therapy, teach you how to perform your daily activities more independently, increase the function of your joints and muscles to help you regain your independence, and help you prevent further disability by developing a comprehensive and individualized home exercise program that best suits your needs.

Our experienced occupational therapists use evidence-based techniques and specialized programs to help you achieve your therapy goals. We pride ourselves on helping our patients achieve the best outcomes possible as quickly as possible.

Our occupational therapists use a variety of manual techniques, exercises, education, modalities and specialized equipment to promote a successful recovery. Our therapists use customized treatment programs to improve each patient’s ability to perform his or her daily activities.

Speech/Swallowing Therapy

Our speech-language pathologists can help with all of these conditions. Our therapists work with patients while they are in the hospital as well as on an outpatient basis, helping them regain their speech, language, cognitive or swallowing skills.

Our speech-language pathologists evaluate and treat the following:

  • Speech—verbal means of communicating
    • Articulation: how speech sounds are made
    • Fluency: rhythm of speech
    • Voice: use of the vocal folds and breathing to produce sounds
  • Language—how we understand and express our needs, feelings and ideas
    • Receptive language: ability to comprehend language, both auditory and written
    • Expressive language: ability to express self verbally, in writing and nonverbally
    • Augmentative communication: other ways of communicating if verbal skills are impaired
  • Cognition—thought process for interpreting and communicating needs, feelings and ideas
    • Attention: ability to stay on task or divide/alternate between tasks
    • Orientation: ability to be aware of surrounding for place, person and time
    • Executive functioning: ability to plan, problem solve, sequence and reason
    • Memory: ability to remember and recall information, both long-term and short-term
  • Swallowing—moving food/liquids from the mouth, throat and esophagus into the stomach
    • Oral phase: moving and chewing the food in the mouth, then transferring it into the throat
    • Pharyngeal phase: passing food through the throat into the esophagus
    • Esophageal phase: passing food through the esophagus into the stomach

Our specialty programs/assessments for swallowing include:

  • The use of VitalStim—Neuromuscular electrical stimulation to the muscles of swallowing, used in conjunction with traditional swallowing therapy
  • Video fluoroscopic swallow evaluation—Noninvasive x-ray of the swallowing mechanism, performed in Riverview’s Imaging Services Department
