Dr. James Sutherland Receives OME Compassion Award

The Aspirus Office of Medical Education (OME) recognizes collaboration and contributions made by Aspirus Physicians and Advanced Practice Clinicians (APCs) as clinical teachers for medical students and advance practice clinician students.

This is the 5th year that OME has recognized these efforts throughout the Aspirus system.

This year’s Compassion Award goes to James Sutherland, MD, with Orthopaedic Associates of Wausau.

Dr. Sutherland exemplifies the heart of a healer to his students. He helps learners understand the role of a healer and recognize the privilege of caring for patients.

Below are submissions by students of Dr. James Sutherland.

“Dr. Sutherland has been very encouraging of my education. He regularly takes time to explain the rationale behind his medical decision making. He encourages me to build upon my skillset and knowledge each day I rotate with him. I think that demonstrates his dedication to be a teacher and excellent educator, and pass his knowledge to future physicians. In addition to all of this, he creates a welcoming environment with his positive and happy attitude.” –Medical Student

“Dr. Sutherland exemplifies the meaning of a mentor and teacher. He is always willing to teach and share his vast knowledge in medicine. He encourages his students to be curious, ask questions, and consistently seek knowledge. He provides books and resources for students to dive deeper and gain more knowledge on topics after a long day of teaching. In the operating room he always incorporates students and allows them to participate in numerous tasks which makes the learning experience that much better. Dr. Sutherland is always willing to let me come in and follow him around no matter the time and day. He has a busy practice to operate with many healthcare members that need to learn and train but somehow always open to me coming in and learning despite me not having any contribution to his practice. He truly enjoys teaching and inspiring the next generation of physician.”—Medical Student
