Dave Callaghan, PT, OCS, a physical therapist with Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital and Clinics, is now certified in Functional Manual Therapy. Only a few hundred people worldwide hold this certification. The Functional Manual Therapy certification is a mastery level certification and helps physical therapists develop customized treatment plans for complex patients.
Callaghan is a board-certified specialist in Orthopedic Physical Therapy whose provided expert care at Aspirus since March 2002. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Lake Superior State University and his physical therapy degree from Central Michigan University.
“Functional Manual Therapy is a detailed, comprehensive treatment approach," Callaghan said. "This approach addresses mechanical, neuromuscular and motor control problems. I’m able to tailor a treatment plan and provide hands-on therapy techniques that are specific to a patient’s needs."
Physical therapy offers many benefits and can be individualized based on a person’s specific issue and end goal. For instance, therapy can help people:
-
Manage pain without using medications.
- Avoid surgery.
- Improve and restore function and movement.
- Recover from an injury or illness. Physical therapy is often part of a rehabilitation program prescribed after an injury or surgery.
“Movement is the key," Callaghan said. "It is crucial to one’s health, wellness and fitness. Pain-free movement allows a patient to achieve their highest potential."
Aspirus Health currently offers free 15-minute consultations with any physical, occupational or speech therapist. The consultations allow individuals to have an area or problem examined and to discuss whether therapy may be beneficial.
