Aspirus Health is
raising awareness about the warning signs and health risks of varicose veins, a
condition that affects millions of Americans, especially women. Varicose veins
are more than a visual issue. If ignored, they can lead to significant complications,
including leg swelling, skin changes, and even ulcerations.
According to Dr.
Joshua Pogorelec, a general surgeon with Aspirus Health, varicose veins
form when the valves in veins break down, allowing blood to collect in the
legs. This causes the veins to stretch and can lead to irritation and swelling
of the lower extremities.
“Varicose veins are
a dilation of our veins that occur when the valves fail and blood pools in the
leg,” Dr. Pogorelec explained. “Over time, this pressure can lead to thinning
of the leg tissue and skin breakdown, which makes early detection and treatment
important.”
The first sign of
trouble is often swelling in the legs, which can progress to symptoms like
numbness, tingling, brown discoloration, and sensations similar to restless leg
syndrome. In more advanced cases, patients may notice skin thinning or
spontaneous bleeding, warning signs that require medical evaluation. While
genetics and family history are major contributors, prolonged standing and
pregnancy also increase risk, particularly in women.
Treatment options
range from conservative to surgical. For early-stage symptoms, Dr. Pogorelec
recommends lifestyle changes like wearing compression stockings, elevating the
legs, and avoiding prolonged standing. For more advanced cases, minimally
invasive procedures like sclerotherapy or vein ablation may be necessary.
“Prevention plays a
key role, especially for people who are on their feet all day,” Dr. Pogorelec
said. “Even simple steps like wearing compression stockings and elevating your
feet at night can relieve pressure and reduce risk.”
Aspirus encourages
individuals experiencing leg discomfort or changes in skin appearance to
consult with their provider. Timely intervention can prevent progression and
improve overall leg health.
