Pulse Field Ablation: A Safer, Faster Option for Atrial Fibrillation

February is Heart Month

Atrial fibrillation, often called AFib, is a common heart rhythm condition that affects how the heart beats and how people feel day to day. For some patients, medications alone are not enough to manage symptoms.

“Atrial fibrillation is a chaotic, irregular heartbeat that starts in the upper chambers of the heart,” said Dr. Ronnie Ortiz, a cardiac electrophysiologist with Aspirus Heart Care. “People may notice palpitations, shortness of breath, chest discomfort, and most commonly, feeling tired.”

When medications are not effective, physicians may recommend an ablation procedure. Ablation targets areas of heart tissue that contribute to the abnormal rhythm. One option used at Aspirus is Pulse Field Ablation (PFA).

“Pulse Field Ablation is very effective, just as effective as traditional ablation,” Ortiz said. “What’s different is that it reduces the risk of collateral damage to nearby structures, which is an important benefit for patients.”

Unlike traditional ablation methods that use heat or cold energy, PFA uses targeted electrical energy, allowing physicians to treat the heart more efficiently.

“What used to take three to four hours can often be done in about an hour,” Ortiz said. “Patients are asleep during the procedure, recovery is faster, and most patients go home the same day.”

Ortiz emphasized the importance of seeking care when symptoms appear.

“The longer atrial fibrillation goes untreated, the more challenging it can be to manage,” he said. “If you’re not feeling well, it’s important to seek care.”

Care for AFib through Aspirus includes evaluation, treatment, and follow-up through a dedicated heart rhythm care team.
