At a time of year
when unintentional injuries are on the rise, Safe Kids Marathon County, led by
Aspirus Wausau Hospital, is celebrating Safe Kids Month by offering events,
resources, and expert advice to help families prevent injuries and keep kids
safe.
Unintentional
injuries among children spike from late spring through summer. According to
Safe Kids Worldwide, 41 percent of all child deaths from unintentional injuries
in the U.S. happen between May and August. These injuries are the leading cause
of death among children nationwide, and millions more are injured in ways that
can affect them for life.
This year’s Safe
Kids Month theme, “The right fit can make a big difference,” highlights the
importance of using properly fitted safety gear like bike helmets, car seats,
and booster seats.
“A helmet that
doesn’t fit snugly or isn’t properly fastened can’t do its job,” says Amanda
Tabin, Safe Kids & Injury Prevention Coordinator at Aspirus Wausau
Hospital. “If it flies off during a crash, it won’t protect the head like it’s
supposed to. That’s why it’s so important to check the fit regularly,
especially since kids grow so quickly.”
To help families,
Safe Kids Marathon County is offering three opportunities for free car seat
checks by appointment in May. Families can schedule a check at www.aspirus.org/safe-kids.
Throughout the
month, Safe Kids will also attend community events where families can get bike
helmets checked for fit and learn how to adjust them correctly. Children in
need of a properly fitted helmet may receive one for free while supplies last,
thanks to support from the Aspirus Wausau Hospital Volunteers.

“Safe Kids Month is
a wonderful opportunity for Marathon County to celebrate child safety and,
ultimately, save lives,” says Tabin. “It’s a moment when we can all pause and
focus on a few simple steps that make a big difference.”
Safe Kids Month is
part of a national campaign led by nearly 400 Safe Kids coalitions and partners
across the country to raise awareness about child injury prevention and empower
parents with practical tools to keep kids safe.
