In recognition of
Arthritis Awareness Month, Aspirus Health is drawing attention to a treatment
available in the region that offers significant relief for people with
arthritis.
Low-dose radiation
therapy is a non-invasive option for patients who have not responded to
traditional treatments like medications, injections, or physical therapy.
“Low-dose radiation
therapy has been used in Europe for decades and is beginning to be used more
widely in the United States,” said Christopher
Platta, MD, Radiation Oncologist and Medical Director of the Oncology Program
at Aspirus Health. “We are pleased to offer this therapy at our Aspirus
locations for patients who are looking for additional pain relief.”
The treatment
involves six sessions spread out over two to three weeks. Each visit lasts
about 15 to 20 minutes per joint and uses a small fraction of the radiation
dose typically used to treat cancer.
“There really is no
recovery time,” said Dr. Platta. “The side effects are minimal to none, and
patients can return to their normal activities immediately. About 80 percent of
patients report improved pain and function in the affected joints.”
David Biundo, a
patient with arthritis, tried low-dose radiation therapy at Aspirus after
exhausting other treatment options.
“I was skeptical at
first because radiation sounded intense,” Biundo said. “But it was painless and
easy. Within weeks, the pain in my shoulders and neck had improved
dramatically. It really made a difference in my quality of life.”
Aspirus currently
offers low-dose radiation therapy at its Wausau, Stevens Point, and Antigo
locations and plans to expand access to additional sites.
“This treatment is
especially helpful for joints that cannot be replaced, like those in the hands
and feet,” said Dr. Platta. “It is convenient, effective, and does not require
surgery or long-term recovery.”
