New technology at Aspirus Iron River allows doctors to see inside the esophagus and stomach with the swallow of a pill-sized camera

Diagnosing abnormalities in the esophagus and stomach just got even more high-tech at Aspirus Iron River Hospital & Clinics with the introduction of the NaviCam® Stomach Capsule Endoscopy System.

With this system, patients swallow an ingestible capsule containing a pill-sized video camera. The camera wirelessly captures images of the mucosa – the lining of the esophagus and stomach. Using a robotic controller located outside the patient, the physician can magnetically control the capsule’s location and viewing direction, allowing for a complete and accurate examination of the stomach. The procedure requires no sedation, so patients can go back to normal activity following the exam.

“With this magnetically controlled capsule endoscopy system, patients receive a higher level of comprehensive surgical care close to home with greater levels of confidence in diagnosing abnormalities in the esophagus and stomach,” said David Lorenson, Manager – Surgical Services.

Capsule endoscopy meets the standards of the American College of Gastroenterology and other nationally recognized societies as a best practice.
