Aspirus Medication Monday Open to the Community

Medication Monday is a unique program that takes place on the third day of each month. It's a gathering where community members come together to discuss a crucial aspect of their well-being: their medications. Hosted at Aspirus outpatient clinics and pharmacies, Medication Monday provides a platform for individuals to review their medication regimens and ask questions in a friendly, welcoming environment.

“At its core, Medication Monday aims to empower individuals to take control of their health. Attendees bring all their medications, including over-the-counter remedies, to the session where pharmacy staff are on hand to meticulously go through each medication, addressing any questions or concerns,” says Lynn Halambeck, Outpatient Pharmacy Manager at Aspirus Wausau Hospital.

The importance of Medication Monday extends beyond a simple review of prescriptions. It's a forum where attendees can openly discuss concerns about potential side effects, interactions between different medications, and explore alternative solutions. This proactive approach not only enhances individual health but also contributes to cost savings by preventing unnecessary medical complications or hospitalizations.

“One of the standout features of Medication Monday is its accessibility. There are no stringent requirements for participation. Anyone interested in managing their health and medications better can simply call in and join the session. It's not limited to those facing critical health issues; rather, it welcomes all who seek knowledge and support,” says Lynn.

  • Here’s what to expect from a Medication Monday appointment:
  • A review of all medications prescribed by all prescribers providing care to the patient, and any over-the-counter and herbal products the patient may be taking to identify and address medication problems. (Problems may include medications not being used correctly, duplication of medications, unnecessary medications, and the need for medications for an untreated or inappropriately managed condition).
  • In-depth, medication-related education, consultation, and advice provided to patients, family and/or caregivers to help assure proper use of medications.
  • Collaboration with the patient, physician, and other health care providers to develop and achieve optimal goals of medication therapy.

Medication Monday isn't just about pills and prescriptions; it's about building a bridge between the community and healthcare professionals. The program fosters an atmosphere of trust and collaboration, where pharmacists share their expertise and participants gain insights into their health. By encouraging open dialogue and knowledge sharing, Medication Monday is a small yet significant step towards a healthier, better-informed society.
