Taking These Medications? You May Be More Sensitive to the Sun

What patients should know before heading outdoors this summer

Sunburn is not always caused by spending too much time outdoors. Certain medications can increase sensitivity to sunlight, making skin reactions more likely after sun exposure.

Known as photosensitivity, this side effect can cause redness, burning, tingling, or rash-like irritation. Many patients do not realize a medication may affect how their skin responds to sunlight until symptoms appear.

According to Marissa Harle, a pharmacy resident at Aspirus, certain antibiotics, acne treatments such as topical retinoids, and other topical skin-care products are among the medications most commonly associated with photosensitivity. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) also notes that some allergy medications, antifungal medications, and pain relievers may increase sensitivity to sunlight.

"There is often a warning label with a picture of a sun on it that will alert you to an increased reaction to sun exposure,” said Harle.

Checking prescription labels and speaking with a pharmacist can help patients better understand the risks and precautions associated with their medications.

Patients taking medications associated with photosensitivity may need to take additional precautions when spending time outdoors. Wearing sunscreen, covering exposed skin, and limiting time in direct sunlight during peak daylight hours can help reduce the likelihood of a reaction.

“Just because you might be taking a medication that does cause an increased sun sensitivity doesn't mean you have to avoid the outdoors altogether,” Harle said. “Be aware of the amount of time you're spending outside, and wear protective clothing and sunscreen, but still enjoy the outdoors.”

Severe sunburn, spreading redness, swelling, or symptoms that continue to worsen after sun exposure should prompt a call to a pharmacist or health care provider.

Knowing whether a medication increases sensitivity to sunlight and taking simple precautions can help patients continue enjoying outdoor activities throughout the summer.
