Julia’s Little Cups

The Skaar family suffered a tragedy that is one of the worst fears imaginable.

The family was hit by a drunk driver on their way home on September 17, 2022. Their 8-year-old son, Ian, was taken to Aspirus Merrill Hospital and eventually lost his life as a result of injuries he sustained from the crash. Leah Skaar, the family’s mother, was flown by helicopter to Aspirus Wausau Hospital where she was treated for her injuries.

In February 2023, Julia Skaar, Ian’s sister, decided to create a fundraiser called “Julia’s Little Cups Fundraiser” to give back to those who helped the family. She baked cupcakes and sold them from their house in Gleason.

Julia shared, “Once I had a brother. He was my best friend. We did almost everything together: Legos, swimming, and Nintendo. But one day, someone crashed into us. Ian was rushed to the Merrill Hospital. The doctor helped me get x-rays, blood tests and a check-up. He was going to be transferred to Marshfield Children’s Hospital, but he didn’t make it. So now I just want to say thanks.”

The fundraiser turned out to be a tremendous success. She received orders for 900 cupcakes! She spent long days baking and frosting, with a few breaks for smiles and laughs…

Julia wrote, “Because Ian died, and I want to thank the doctors for how much they tried. And so, I can donate for others.” She also wrote about how the cupcakes would help other kids in the hospital and herself. “I want kids to feel comfortable when they are in the hospital. Plus, I will love it when I deliver the cupcakes to people! And I will have lots of fun!”

Julia ended up raising $4,641, which she donated to local organizations that helped the family during their crisis.

The Aspirus Merrill Hospital Foundation and Aspirus Health Foundation would like to thank the Skaar family for their generous donation. The family wishes to relay their gratitude for everyone’s kindness, support and love that made their dark days just a little bit brighter.
