Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, but early detection and prevention can save lives. Community members are invited to learn more about melanoma and other skin cancers during an upcoming “Talk With A Doc” presentation hosted by Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital & Clinics in recognition of Skin Cancer Awareness Month.
The free event, “Melanoma & Skin Cancer Awareness,” will feature Kristi Wegener, MD, Family Medicine Physician with Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital & Clinics. Dr. Wegener will share important information on identifying skin cancer warning signs, understanding risk factors, and taking steps to protect skin health.
The event will take place Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. at the Aspirus Houghton Clinic. Light refreshments will be provided. During the session, Dr. Wegener will discuss a variety of skin cancer-related topics, including:
- Common types of skin cancer, including melanoma
- Warning signs and changes to watch for
- Risk factors for developing skin cancer
- Prevention strategies and sun safety tips
- When to see a provider for a skin check
“Skin cancer is highly treatable when detected early, but many people are unsure what signs to look for or when to seek care,” said Dr. Wegener. “This event is an opportunity to help our community feel more confident about protecting their skin and knowing when it’s time to talk with a healthcare provider.”
The Talk With A Doc series provides an opportunity for community members to connect with physicians in an informal setting while learning about important health topics and services available locally.
The event is free and open to the public, but registration is requested. For more information, or to register, call 906-337-6541.
