Understanding the Skin’s Aging Process

What You Can Do to Protect Your Skin Over Time

As people age, their skin naturally becomes thinner, less elastic, and more prone to wrinkles and discoloration. While these changes are part of the aging process, many of the most visible signs are influenced by everyday choices and environmental factors.

At Aspirus Plastic Surgery and Aesthetics, Nurse Practitioner Nikole Larkin works with patients to help them better understand how skin ages and what steps can be taken to protect and improve it. She says that although genetics play a role, lifestyle habits such as sun exposure, smoking, diet, and skincare routines can have a significant impact.

“Skin becomes more fragile as we get older,” said Larkin. “But there are several things people can do to keep it healthy and reduce the appearance of aging.”

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, up to 90 percent of the visible skin changes commonly attributed to aging are caused by the sun. With proper protection from ultraviolet radiation, most premature aging of the skin can be avoided.

Larkin recommends wearing broad-spectrum sunscreen every day, even during colder months or cloudy conditions. She also encourages the use of protective clothing. Many standard fabrics do not block UV rays, but sun-protective clothing and accessories can help reduce long-term damage.

Aspirus offers a range of options for those who want to address signs of aging or improve their skin’s health. These include medical-grade skincare products, microneedling, and laser treatments that help encourage the skin’s natural regenerative processes. Larkin works with patients to create personalized plans based on their goals, lifestyle, and skin condition.

“It is never too early or too late to start taking care of your skin,” said Larkin. “A few consistent habits and the right guidance can make a big difference.”
