Your childbirth experience should be as unique as your new pride and joy. It’s why we designed the Birthing Center at Aspirus Medford Hospital around greater birthing options, added comfort for you and your family and, of course, medical excellence.
Our Birthing Center provides a warm and peaceful atmosphere in spacious birthing suites. We also offer a state-of-the-art C-section surgical suite for mothers who require cesarean deliveries.
Our birthing team can support your delivery with or without pain medication management. And should your newborn need more advanced medical care after birth, we provide safe and immediate transport to Aspirus Wausau Hospital’s Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

The Birthing Center at Aspirus Medford Hospital will do everything possible to make your delivery the most comfortable and meaningful moment for you and your family. And for your new bundle of joy, we have everything in place to ensure his or her entry into this world is a secure and welcoming experience. Your birthing options include:
- Traditional bed birthing experience – We can offer you a a warm, comfortable, and homelike setting. At Aspirus Medford Hospital it is not our intent to shuffle you from one location to the next. Once you’ve been registered to a room, your family members will know exactly where you will be for your labor, birth, and recovery/celebration. Your birthing suite is medically equipped with advanced technology for you and your baby.
- Cesarean delivery – Aspirus Medford Hospital surgeons and OB/GYNs are board-certified and keep up with the latest procedures. Our friendly and compassionate nurses will stand by your side and hold your hand, if you need that extra touch of support.
You can be assured of comfort and pain management. We will always:
- Listen carefully to you
- Explain things in a manner you will understand
- Provide a 24-hour nurses hotline for our mothers
- And will always do everything we can to help you with your pain
If you have a question after you and your baby are discharged, don’t worry. We will provide you with a 24-hour phone number that a Birthing Center nurse will answer.
Pain Management Options for Child Birth
There are several different forms of anesthesia administration for child birth. They may be used independently or in conjunction with one another. Some of the most commonly administered anesthetics are listed below.
- Intravenous (IV) Pain Medications - These are injected into a muscle or through an IV (intravenous) catheter.
- Epidurals - The delivery of pain relief drugs or local anesthetics through a tiny tube called a catheter, placed in the small of the back, just outside the spinal canal.
- Intrathecal Injections - A pain relief method is similar to an epidural, but administered with a smaller needle into the spinal canal and faster-acting effects.
During Your Stay
The birth of your baby is a precious beginning filled with excitement and wonder. Your labor team of doctors and nurses are committed to making your birthing experience positive and comfortable for you. Feel free to tell them what you expect and how they can make your stay, your birth, as memorable, personalized, and pampered as can be.
- Mother-Baby Nursing Care
After the birth of your baby, you will have a personal nurse that will care for both you and your baby together. Your nurse will be your informant, educator, and comfort specialist. Your nurse will provide individualized care for you, your baby, and your family.
- Baby Photos
Your baby’s picture will be taken shortly after birth, as a part of the Hospital’s Security Plan. Shortly before going home, another photo will be taken for Aspirus’ Online Nursery. If you wish, you may have your baby dressed in a special outfit for this photograph.
- Education During your Stay
Because these first days are a time of learning for new parents, education is a main focus of Aspirus Birthing Center’s activities. Your nurse will provide you with one-to-one demonstrations and instructions regarding bathing, dressing, breastfeeding, and much more.
- Lactation Services & Breastfeeding Warm Line
Certified lactation consultants are available daily to help you and your baby get a good start with breastfeeding, and the consultants can meet with nursing moms after discharge for ongoing support. Our Breastfeeding “Warm Line” at 866-227-0105 connects you with support anytime day or night.
- Visiting Hours
Family members and friends are welcome to visit. Visiting hours end at 9:00 pm. Fathers/support persons may choose to spend the night with in-room sleeping accommodations. Ask your nurse to help you with these arrangements.
We will ask a few things of your guests, because patient health and comfort are our primary concerns.
- Anyone with a cold, sore throat, flu, or any contagious diseases is encouraged not to visit patients. To control the spread of infection you may be asked to wear a mask.
- Visitors may be limited to ensure adequate rest time for the patient.
- Visitors will be asked to maintain a quiet environment and avoid unnecessary noise.
- And to help respect and ensure patient privacy and integrity, visitors may be asked to leave the room during tests or treatments, or when a healthcare provider needs to see the patient.
