Aspirus Reference Laboratory

Aspirus Reference Laboratory (ARL) is a state-of-the-art diagnostic testing facility in Wausau, Wisconsin in Central WI. We serve Aspirus Wausau Hospital and the numerous other referring hospitals, clinics, and specialty medical care practices within the Aspirus network as well as out-of-network hospitals and providers, long-term care facilities, assisted living facilities, and visiting nurse associations in Central WI and Upper Peninsula (UP) of Michigan regions.

The ARL is accredited by major accrediting organizations including the College of American Pathologists, and the Joint Commission, and is CLIA-certified to perform highly complex testing.

Operating 24/7, 365 days we offer comprehensive test menus in chemistry, coagulation, flow cytometry, hematology, immunology, microbiology, transfusion services, and urinalysis. We perform more than one million billable routine and esoteric tests annually through inpatient, outpatient, and outreach services.  

We partner with Associated Regional and Universal Pathologists (ARUP) Laboratories when extremely specialized testing is required and with Associates in Pathology, SC for anatomical pathology testing.

ARL has an owned and operated courier service for our laboratory clients, with same-day delivery to ARL for most specimens. This means our highly trained medical laboratory staff can provide results in less time. Results are available in real-time via Epic and EpicLink.

We are dedicated to the field of Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS) and proudly offer an intensive 9-month CLS Program for students affiliated with baccalaureate degree CLS programs.

ARL is a testing facility only; no on-site specimen collection services are available. Many Aspirus clinics in and around surrounding communities and locations throughout the entire Aspirus service area offer specimen collection services. All patients with a valid lab order from both in and out-of-network providers may go to any of these locations for specimen collection services.
