Regular physical activity essential for healthy aging
Exercise and physical activity are important parts of any healthy lifestyle, especially for adults ages 65 years and older. Regular exercise benefits mental and physical health and makes it easier to perform the activities of daily living that can support independence as you age.
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, about half of all American adults have one or more preventable chronic diseases. Most of these are favorably influenced by regular physical activity. This lack of activity is linked to approximately $117 billion in annual health care costs and to about 10 percent of premature mortality.
After retiring from a 43-year teaching career, Montello resident Beth Turner decided that it was time to do something for herself and started a new exercise program at LaVita Fitness Center at Aspirus Divine Savior (ADS) in Portage.
“I have struggled with my weight my whole life and knew I should be exercising, or at least walking, on a regular basis” said Beth. “I decided a great way to get started was swimming at the LaVita Fitness Center. The warm water in the therapy pool felt great on my joints and made getting moving much easier.”
LaVita Fitness Specialist Demi McAlpin worked with Beth on her specific fitness goals. “Together we determined that the transition program, designed for clients that could benefit from weight loss before surgery, was a perfect fit” said Demi. “Beth has been very successful, making positive strides, toning her muscles and losing weight.”
“As I join in even more fitness activities, I’m finding out I actually have muscles in my core and can flex muscles I never knew I had” said Beth. “My knees feel better and my flexibility and balance have improved so much”. “I drive from Montello 3 or 4 days a week, and it’s worth every mile!”
Physical activity can preserve function and mobility and delay the onset of major disability, helping to promote staying in the home longer. Active older adults are less likely to experience falls, and if they do fall, they are less likely to be seriously injured.
It is recommended that as part of any fitness plan, older adults should do varied physical activity that includes balance training as well as aerobic and muscle-strengthening activities. Those with chronic conditions should understand whether and how their conditions affect their ability to do physical activity safely.
Individuals should consult their primary care physician or other health professional before starting any fitness program to determine a proper exercise regimen.
