“I like taking on challenges, working collaboratively to make the delivery of health care better,” Dr. VanWylen said. “Surgeons should not only be great technicians in the operating room, but should also be great diagnosticians.”

Dr. VanWylen earned his medical degree at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine in East Lansing, Mich. He completed his general surgery residency at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Mich., and his general thoracic surgery residency at E. Birmingham Hospital in Birmingham, England.

In his free time, Dr. VanWylen enjoys the outdoors, hiking, wilderness canoeing and tending to a backyard apple orchard. He is also a masters swimming competitor. Before going to medical school, Dr. VanWylen went to seminary in England; he’s taught high school catechism for many years. He and his wife, Kathy, have five grown children.
