Aspirus Health is
expanding its lymphedema services to help more patients prevent and manage
chronic swelling caused by a compromised lymphatic system. The expanded program
offers early detection, personalized care, and long-term support, led by a team
of certified lymphedema therapists who specialize in helping patients regain
comfort and mobility.
Lymphedema affects
millions of Americans and can result from cancer treatment, injury, or
infection. Left untreated, it can lead to pain, loss of function, and
significant complications. According to the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention, catching lymphedema early is key to slowing its progression and
improving quality of life.
“Early intervention
makes a big difference,” says Kaycie
Berhorst, an occupational therapist specializing in oncology rehabilitation.
“Our goal is to help patients take control of this condition before it becomes
debilitating.”
Aspirus therapists
provide a comprehensive range of services including compression garment
fitting, specialized manual lymphatic drainage massage, development of a home
exercise program to maximize lymphatic flow, skin care education, and emotional
support. The program also distinguishes between lymphedema and lipedema, two
conditions often confused but requiring different treatment approaches.
Collaboration with wound care, dermatology, and oncology ensures patients
receive comprehensive care tailored to their goals.
“Treatment works
best when there’s collaboration between the patient, the therapist, and all
providers,” Berhorst added. “We want people to know that lymphedema can be
managed, and that they’re not alone.”
Aspirus offers
certified lymphedema therapists at most locations and will assist patients in
finding nearby specialists when needed. The expansion of these services
reflects Aspirus Health’s broader mission to improve lives through proactive,
compassionate care.
