How Does AFib Feel?

Although atrial fibrillation is not usually life-threatening, it can be upsetting as people experience a variety of symptoms. You may even have AFib for years and not even know it. Patients with atrial fibrillation are five to seven times more likely of having a stroke than patients without A-fib. If you have symptoms, you may feel:

  • Heart palpitations (a sudden pounding, fluttering, or racing feeling in the chest)
  • Lack of energy; feeling over-tired, weak or fatigued
  • Dizziness (feeling faint or light-headed)
  • Chest discomfort (pain, pressure, or discomfort in the chest)
  • Shortness of breath (difficulty breathing during normal activities or even at rest)
  • Decreased ability to do normal activities
