Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
Chronic wounds are estimated to affect more than 7 million Americans, and that number is growing rapidly. In 2009, the Aspirus Wound & Hyperbaric Center treated nearly 400 patients suffering from chronic wounds, and for some of these patients, hyperbaric oxygen therapy is the only opportunity to heal a serious, chronic wound or event to save a limb.
The Aspirus Wound & Hyperbaric Center at Aspirus Wausau Hospital is one of only a handful of locations in the state with hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?
HBOT helps the body’s oxygen-dependent, wound-healing mechanisms function more efficiently by creating an optimal healing environment.
The hyperbaric chamber creates an environment that is at greater-than-normal atmospheric pressure. This promotes healing by delivering more oxygen to hypoxic (oxygen-deprived) tissue at a partial pressure that is 15 to 20 times greater than normal.
If you have a chronic wound that has been unresponsive to medications or other treatments, talk to your doctor to see if hyperbaric oxygen therapy may be right for you.
