Critical Care Transport

Aspirus Wausau Hospital's nationally recognized quality care begins the mement we ready a patient for transfer. Our new ambulance is a mobile intensive care unit equipped with advanced cardio-pulmonary equipment and is in continuous contact with Aspirus Wausau Hospital's Emergency Department Medical Control. The patient is monitored by a registered nurse and if necessary, a registered respiratory therapist, during transport. Once at the receiving hospital, these professional give a complete report to the accepting physician and nurses.

The critical care transport team works under the medical direction and standing protocols of Scott Howells, MD. Nine board-certified emergency medicine physicians staff Aspirus Wausau Hospital's Emergency Department and provide on-line medical support for all critical care transports.

  • Quality cre is provided by registered nurses, EMTs and respiratory therapists as necessary.
  • The staff is certified in ACLS, ENPC, PALS and TNCC for adult and pediatric patients.
  • All EMTs are Emergency Vehicle Operation certified.
  • The patient is monitored by a registered nurse and a paramedic. If necessary, a specialty service may be onboard during transport.
  • The critical care transport team works under the medical direction and standing protocols of Tom Nielsen, M.D.

Beginning August 1, 2003, we have helped provide faster access to a higher level of emergency care for residents of outlying communities in Marthon and Lincoln counties. This intercept service is now being provided by Aspirus Wausau Hospital Critical Care Transport. In this service, the Critical Care Transport (CCT) with an RN and Paramedic aboard meets an incoming ambulance transporting a critically ill or injured patient at a predetermined location. The RN and paramedic transfer to the ambulance to provide advanced life support as the ambulance completes its run to Aspirus Wausau Hospital.

The RN and Paramedic can provide treatments such as administration of drugs and advance airway management. The intercept service more quickly delivers this higher level of care to the patinet.

Area ambulance services that will use the new service are Hatley, Wittenberg, Birnamwood, Weston, Schofield, Rib Mountain, Rothschild, Mosinee, Athens, Edgar and Merrill.
