Metastatic Breast Cancer

Trial Name: A Randomized Phase III Trial of the Value of Early Local Therapy for the Intact Primary Tumor in Patients with Metastatic Breast Cancer.

Eligibility:

  • Patients (male or female) must have an intact primary (not recurrent) invasive carcinoma of the breast.  Biopsy confirmation of the primary tumor should be a needle biopsy (preferred); incisional surgical biopsy is allowed as long as there is residual palpable or imageable tumor in the breast.
  • Patients with synchronous contralateral breast cancer are excluded.
  • Patients should have at least one site of distant metastatic disease.  If only a single metastatic lesion is present, biopsy is mandatory.
  • Patients may have had prior non-invasive (DCIS) cancer if there has been no recurrence.
  • Patients with a history of other primary cancers are eligible if the pathology report confirming the diagnosis of primary breast cancer is available and the other primary cancer was curatively treated with a 5-yeart disease-free interval.
  • Women of childbearing potential and sexually active males must be strongly advised to use an accepted and effective method of contraception.

Enrollment: • About 880 people will take part in this study at several medical centers.

Benefits:

Taking part in this study may or may not make your health better.  While doctors hope breast surgery and radiation early in the course of metastatic disease will be more useful against cancer compared to the usual treatment, there is no proof of this yet.  We do know that the information from this study will help doctors learn more about breast surgery and radiation as part of the treatment for metastatic breast cancer.  This information could help future cancer patients.
