Safety Wise Patch Program
Program age level: Daisy (Grades K-1); Brownie (Grades 2-3)
Purpose: To equip Girl Scouts with information about preventing accidental injuries.

Each session is limited to a maximum of 15 participants and must have a minimum of 7 participants. Additional sessions may be added if demand is very high.
Requirements: Complete each of the seven activities listed below.
About this Program
The Aspirus Trauma Program, Safe Kids Wausau Area, and the Aspirus Children’s Safety Center, in partnership with the Girl Scouts of the Northwestern Great Lakes, offers Girl Scouts the opportunity to learn about preventing accidental injury by utilizing safety devices and by being informed about safe choices.
This program allows troops to work with the Safe Kids Wausau Area and earn the Safety Wise patch.
How to Participate
This program will be offered quarterly and on an ongoing basis. To inquire about specific program components, please call the Aspirus Safe Kids Coordinator at 715.847.2864. The program contains activities that will be completed both as groups and individually.
Each troop leader will receive an informational letter and forms packet upon registration.
Each participant will be charged a program fee of $7. Fees may be paid through the Aspirus Information Center with a credit card at the time of registration or the evening of the event by a check made payable to Safe Kids Wausau Area.

Program Activities
You must complete all seven components of the program to earn your Safety Wise patch.
1. Take part in Aspirus Wausau Hospital’s Teddy Bear Clinic
You will get to see what it is like to be a patient in the Emergency Department and bring your favorite stuffed animal to be treated by our Teddy Bear Clinic doctors. The MedEvac Ambulance staff will then show you inside of the ambulance and equipment they use to help patients. To end the tour we will see the Aspirus Children’s Safety Center and talk about safety devices that you can use such as bike helmets, booster seats and home safety supplies that will help protect you from accidental injuries. This activity is completed at Aspirus Wausau Hospital.
2. Riding safely in the car
Each girl will have the opportunity to test out which type of child restraint is safest for her to be sitting in for her age. This activity is completed at Aspirus Wausau Hospital.
3. Helmet safety
See how our Egg Helmet does during his safe and unsafe bike ride. You will learn how to properly fit a helmet and what different types of safety helmets are used for. This activity is completed at Aspirus Wausau Hospital.
4. Fire Safety

- With your family draw and practice a fire escape route. Plan a meeting area outside of your house.

Count how many smoke alarms are in your house. Make sure you have a smoke alarm on every level and in every bedroom.

With an adult test your smoke alarms each month. Make a smoke alarm checklist chart and keep it on the refrigerator and check off each month when you test the smoke alarm. Change your smoke alarm batteries once a year.
5. Stay safe at home
Complete a home safety checklist. See your learning pack for handouts for this activity.

Make sure your water heater is set at 120 degrees or lower to prevent scalds.

If you have younger siblings in the home, make sure cabinet locks are installed on medicine cabinets and cabinets where cleaning products are kept.

Have an adult install gun locks on any guns that are kept in the home.

Install at least one carbon monoxide alarm in your home. Keep it close to your sleeping areas.
6. Safe Sleep Campaign
Make a poster to hang in the Aspirus Children’s Safety Center educating the public on the importance of safe sleep environments for babies. See your learning pack for reference materials to help you with this activity.
7. Pedestrian Safety

Color the pedestrian safety coloring sheets highlighting the safety message.

With an adult take a walk around your home and talk about where it is safe to walk on the road. Remember to walk on the left side of the road if you do not have sidewalks near your home and wear bright color clothing.
