Night Vision Technology
Aspirus MedEvac air employs the newest generation of Night Vision technology, providing a substantial edge on the elements and ensuring timeliness and the safe delivery of patients. This advanced technology allows pilots to spot power lines, trees and other hazards in the dark. MedEvac is the only medical helicopter in central Wisconsin to utilize this technology.
Night Vision Goggles(NVGs) work by enhancing what little light there is in a surrounding area. These tiny particles of light are multiplied after striking a cathode plate within the goggles. The resulting particles then hit a phosphor plate (like a television) enabling the individual to see as if it were the middle of the day.
An FAA study found that when properly used, NVGs can increase safety, enhance situational awareness, and reduce pilot workload and stress that are typically associated with night operations.
Benefits of NVGs include: more efficient navigation, a greater ability to identify hazards, and a heightened ability to locate the horizon in unfamiliar terrain.

PHI was first to establish its own training department dedicated exclusively to the training of pilots and mechanics. The curriculum deals extensively with human factors as well as mechanical emergencies.
The NVG program is one of the many safety measures that PHI Air Medical has implemented. PHI was recently recognized with the prestigious Vision Zero Aviation Safety Award which recognizes one company in the air medical industry who has embodied the goal of flight safety and zero accidents of consequence.
