Gastric Banding

The REALIZE Banding Solution (adjustable gastric band surgery) is one of three surgical weight loss options available at Aspirus Bariatrics. This surgery implants a band that wraps around the stomach to limit food intake. This will make you feel full sooner, resulting in less food consumption, which makes it easier to practice healthy eating and lifestyle habits.

Like other bariatric surgery, the REALIZE band surgery is for individuals suffering from morbid obesity. The pre- and post surgery requirements are similar to gastric bypass surgery.

The adjustable gastric band divides the stomach into two parts – a small upper pouch and a lower stomach. The upper pouch can only hold about 4 ounces (1/2 cup) of food, making you feel full sooner and longer than usual.

In most cases, the REALIZE band is implanted using laporoscopic surgery, a procedure that results in shorter hospital stays, faster recovery, smaller scars, and less pain than traditional procedures.

The band is adjustable, so if the rate of weight loss is not acceptable, the band can be tightened to make you feel full after eating less. Additionally, if weight loss is occurring too quickly, the band can be loosened, so that more food is needed to feel full.
