Who is a Candidate?

Candidates for gastric bypass surgery should meet the following general criteria:
  • At least 100 pounds overweight or 100 percent above ideal weight.

  • Body Mass Index (BMI) of at least 40, or 35 with severe weight-related health problems.

  • Severe weight-related health problems such as diabetes, heart disease, severe GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) joint, muscle and skeletal problems caused by severe obesity.

  • At least 19 years old.

  • A history of severe GERD or severe obesity and documented attempts of non-surgical weight-loss treatments that have failed.

  • No history of substance abuse.

  • No history of major psychiatric disorders.

  • All patients must have a referral from their primary care physician and/or a specialty physician outlining the reasons that obesity surgery would improve their health.

  • Patients will have a nutritional assessment prior to surgery.

  • Patients will have a fitness assessment by a physical therapist prior to surgery.

  • A psychiatric profile might be required for select patients.
