Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
The Aspirus Women’s Health Birthing Center offers world-class care for the Wausau area’s most vulnerable patients in the Anya Marie Jackson Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
Our state-of- the-art on-site NICU makes it possible for you and your baby to remain together through the first critical days after birth. As a Level 3A NICU, we provide infant care for babies over 27 weeks gestation, or 2.1 pounds.
12 Private Rooms
Our NICU is the only one in the area to utilize the private-room care model, featuring 12 private rooms with space to accommodate 14 babies. The private rooms are 204-square feet and feature a recliner and a sofa bed for family, so they can be with their newborn(s) as much as possible.
The private-room concept allows premature and critically-ill newborns to receive individualized developmental care in an environment that provides families and newborns the privacy and family-focused experience they need to bond and obtain maximum health.
Parents can visit more frequently and stay close to their child. This ability to participate in the care of their infant not only helps with the bonding process, but also gives parents greater control over the care of their infant.
Family Wait Room
Premature and critically-ill babies may spend several days in the NICU. Our spacious family wait room offers family and friends a place to spend time as they wait to visit. The comforting, warm environment has plenty of amenities, including a fireplace, TV, children’s play area and computers with Internet access.
Family Sleep Room
When newborns are in the NICU, mom and dad can use the family sleep room the night before their baby is discharged, or for other special circumstances.
Regional Transport Team
Our regional transport team serves area hospitals and also provides transfer to a higher level of intensive care, if needed. The services provided by our NICU team members reflect a respect for the individuality of each infant and family.
Outstanding and highly committed experts trained in specialized infant care are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year to treat babies requiring care in our NICU.
These neonatologists work closely with your baby’s doctor, supported by pediatric specialists in cardiology and gastroenterology, with referral specialist as needed.
The NICU interdisciplinary team includes:
