The Clinical Laboratory Scientist, also known as a Medical Technologist/Clinical Laboratory Scientist, is a vital member of the health care team and provides precise laboratory test data necessary for the proper diagnosis and treatment of disease.

A clinical laboratory scientist utilizes highly sophisticated analytical instruments and computers, and uses sound judgment in the process of performing analyses on blood and other body fluids. A good deal of manual dexterity as well as integrity, reliability, and accuracy are the trademarks of a laboratory professional.

In the clinical laboratory the clinical laboratory scientist may work as a generalist in all areas or specialize in an area such as Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, Microbiology, or Urinalysis. Employment opportunities are also available in related health care areas, in industrial and research labs, with medical supply companies in sales, service, or technical development.

Program graduates are eligible to take one or more national certification exams such as the American Society of Clinical Pathologists Board of Registry and the National Certification Agency for Medical Laboratory Personnel.
