WAUSAU, Wis. – The Aspirus Heart & Vascular Institute (AHVI) is offering a free seminar on March 2 where people can learn more about atrial fibrillation and an innovative treatment for the heart condition that affects an estimated 2.5 million Americans.
The seminar is at the Wausau East High School auditorium and will run from 6:30 to 8 p.m. It is free to attend, but registration is required.
The seminar features nationally known speaker, Mellanie True Hills, an atrial fibrillation survivor who will provide a message of hope and encouragement by sharing her personal story of her battle with the condition.
AHVI surgeon John Johnkoski, M.D., also will provide information about minimally invasive surgery that treats atrial fibrillation and allows people to reduce medications, prevent strokes and live longer.
Atrial fibrillation is a common condition that causes the heart to beat irregularly and greatly increases the risk of stroke. The condition can be fairly well managed with Coumadin, a blood thinner that helps reduce the risk of stroke, but the drug can produce side effects that are difficult for some people to handle.
Minimally invasive ablation is a procedure that allows people to get off medications, prevent strokes and live longer. Dr. Johnkoski is one of fewer than 50 physicians in the nation that performs the procedure. During the seminar, he will discuss:
-
Pros and cons of surgery.
-
Types of procedures.
-
Success rates.
-
Recovery time.
-
Getting off Coumadin.
