Matthew Heywood offers 19 years of health care leadership

WAUSAU, Wis. – On July 1, Matthew Heywood began serving as the new president and chief executive officer for Aspirus, Inc.

Heywood comes to the community from Wilmington, NC, where he served New Hanover Health Network as executive vice president and chief operating officer since 2008. During this time, Heywood helped guide the non-profit, 855-bed health system through numerous service and efficiency improvement initiatives while strengthening partnerships with a broad range of system partners.

As a former Michigan resident, Heywood is eager to return to the Midwest with his family.
 
Aspirus Board Chair Todd Nicklaus was a member of the search committee that ultimately selected Heywood. “We evaluated many qualified and motivated candidates, but Matt was the perfect fit for Aspirus,” Nicklaus said. “The health care industry is experiencing unprecedented change right now, and Matt’s skill set and leadership approach are exactly what the organization needs to succeed in an industry dealing with sweeping reforms.”

Heywood will replace current president and CEO Duane Erwin, who presided over a period of rapid system growth through expansion, service development and regional partnership. Since Erwin joined in January 2006, Aspirus has nearly doubled its employees, cemented solid business relationships with two Wisconsin hospitals and added three more in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Erwin will retire as of June 28, 2013.

But business imperatives have changed as the health care industry has changed, and Heywood has a wealth of knowledge and experience driving efficiency and service improvements, building coalitions and implementing strategic plans. These skills will help Aspirus continue to thrive in an industry that is moving away from paying providers for the amount of care they offer to paying them for the quality of the health outcomes they achieve.

Heywood is looking forward to the new position and the new challenge.
