Riverview Hospital’s student preceptorship program is available to college or technical college students who need an unpaid hospital or health care experience to complete their course requirements. The preceptorship program does not apply to high school students, CCHI (Central Cities Health Institute) students or job-shadow students.
Riverview offers a student preceptorship program for both clinical and nonclinical students. The preceptorship program is a structured program that serves as a means of providing instruction, direction or guidance to an individual. A preceptorship is an opportunity that offers an individual the experience necessary to meet the requirements for course completion in a health care setting.
A physician/clinic office copy of all of the above immunizations or titers must be faxed to Riverview’s Employee Health Department at 715-421-7505.
PPDs will be good for one year up to the last date of your preceptorship experience. (For example: If the last day of your preceptorship is Sept. 17, 2013, and your PPD will not expire before this date, you will not need to have a repeat PPD done prior to starting your preceptorship experience. If your PPD will expire prior to the last day of your preceptorship, you will need to have a repeat PPD done and fax a copy of the results to Riverview’s Employee Health Department.)
To accept a student into our student preceptorship program, Riverview Medical Center must have a current signed contract with your school/facility.

Riverview's student preceptorship program is designed to provide challenging learning opportunities for clinical and nonclinical students that encourage the application of theoretical and conceptual knowledge within a clinical and nonclinical setting. The assigned preceptor provides for the continuity of learning, evaluation and institutional socialization for the student.
Riverview's student preceptorship program will:
Under the direct supervision of a Riverview-identified preceptor, the student performs those tasks for which she or he has been trained and in which she or he is able to appropriately demonstrate to the preceptor.
Riverview's student preceptorship program is designed as a collaborative effort between Riverview, the preceptor, the student and the student's instructor. Through this partnership, clinical and nonclinical judgment and interventions can be processed and enhanced.
All students should wear their school identification badge during their preceptorship. If a student does not have a specific school identification, Riverview will provide an identification badge. This would apply mainly to radiology tech students and med tech (CLS) students.
All clinical students will wear their school uniform. All nonclinical students will wear professional attire.
The student may choose one area or unit to assist in the completion of the preceptorship program. The student may not rotate to other departments within Riverview during the preceptorship program.
Each clinical and nonclinical skill that is performed must be validated by the direct observation of a Riverview-identified preceptor. Therefore, the clinical or nonclinical skill must be performed with the preceptor immediately present for consultation and education.
The student and his or her preceptor will collaboratively work in a learning environment throughout the preceptorship program.
Riverview is a teaching hospital, and as such, students may be involved in patient care. We recognize that acting as a clinical site benefits the students and their school; Riverview; and, ultimately, our community and our patients. On the other hand, Riverview also recognizes that patients do have the right to refuse having a student participate in their care. Therefore, each area within the hospital has a process for identifying and honoring patient requests to not have a student. Efforts will be made to communicate that information to the student.
A part of the process will be that all patients requesting not to have a student will have “NS” written on their armbands. In accordance with National Patient Safety Goal No. 1, patient identification consists of verification of name and date of birth, which can be found on the patient armband. Should the student or preceptor note the “NS” on a patient armband, the appropriate instructor, charge nurse or supervisor in the area will be notified so that the student’s assignment may be adjusted.
